You don't have to be rich to make a difference. How many times have people said "thank you" to you for making a difference? For helping out others? For making something better?

You make a difference in the lives of others everyday. You can also "create a legacy" that will benefit people in our community in the years to come. Did you know that our quality of life has been improved by the generosity of those who have made a commitment to the future of their community?

Your charitable planned gift will support the future of Hurley and the health care services and programs that it provides to our community. It is entirely up to you. Your planned gift, whether large or small, will make a difference!

"People helping people. That's how Hurley Medical Center began and how it continues today..."

Hurley Medical Center is the vision of James J. Hurley, whose estate made a gift of land and $55,000 in 1905 that ensured the availability of health care to all, regardless of their ability to pay. Over the years, individuals, families, businesses, and civic and community groups have continued his vision of building for the future. From its humble beginning, Hurley now stands as the centerpiece of comprehensive health care and medical education. Just as James J. Hurley was on the cutting edge of providing support for the health care needs of our community at the turn of the century, the members of the James J. Hurley Society are building for this century. The Hurley Foundation established the James J. Hurley Society to recognize donors who are making use of estate planning and charitable giving to support the future work of Hurley.

You are invited to continue the vision.
Through your own estate and financial planning, you can do something special to support Hurley as it prepares to meet the future health care needs of our community. Your charitable planned gift to the Hurley Foundation qualifies you as a member of the James J. Hurley Society.

How can I make a charitable planned gift to help Hurley and qualify as a member of the James J. Hurley Society?
There are various approaches to planned giving that can meet your own individual needs and interests:

  • You can make a bequest to Hurley through your Will. A bequest is a specific gift noted in your Will. It is an excellent way of ensuring the distribution of your assets to your loved ones, other individuals, and organizations that have been important to you through the years. This is how James J. Hurley left his planned gift to our community.
  • You can name Hurley as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, donate an existing policy to Hurley, or establish a new policy with Hurley as the beneficiary. A life insurance policy can be utilized in a variety of ways as a charitable planned gift.
  • You can name Hurley as a beneficiary of your pension plan/IRA. This can be arranged in a variety of ways.
  • You can name Hurley as a beneficiary of a charitable trust that you may establish to meet your estate planning needs. Different types of charitable trusts allow you to make a significant donation without reducing your personal income.
  • You can make a significant pledge of a gift to be contributed to the Hurley Foundation Endowment Fund over a period of years.
  • You can make a significant contribution to the Hurley Foundation Gift Annuity Fund. A gift annuity is a simple contract between you and the Hurley Foundation. In return for your contribution, the Hurley Foundation makes fixed, regular payments to you throughout your lifetime.
  • You can make a gift of real estate or property that would be received by the Hurley Foundation.

How much do I have do contribute to make a charitable planned gift?
You decide the amount and value of your planned gift that qualifies you as a member of the James. J. Hurley Society. It is the type of gift that counts. The gift is a charitable planned gift. A gift planned for the future.

Do I have to tell Hurley how much I am contributing through my planned gift?
We appreciate the opportunity to recognize your generosity and keep you informed of the activities and work of Hurley that might be of interest to you. However, you decide how you wish to inform us about your planned gift.

  • For gifts made through a bequest, life insurance policy, or charitable trust, you may or may not chose to inform the Foundation of the value of the gift.
  • For gifts to the Hurley Foundation Endowment Fund and Gift Annuity Fund, the amount of the gift needs to be determined.
  • For gifts of real estate and property, an assessment needs to be made as to their value.

Will my gift be held in confidence? If I wish to remain anonymous, will I still receive information about the work of Hurley and the activities of the James J. Hurley Society?
YES. Knowing that each of us have different views on recognition and levels of involvement, the Hurley Foundation will make arrangements to respect your individual wishes.

Who can I talk with to make arrangements for establishing a charitable planned gift and becoming a member of the James. J. Hurley Society?
Be sure your gift is arranged properly so that you will enjoy the maximum legal and tax advantages available. This will ensure that the transfer of your charitable planned gift will go smoothly when the time arrives.

  • Each form of charitable planned giving offers different tax benefits. The Hurley Foundation encourages you to consult your accountant, financial planner, attorney, trust officer, or other financial advisor regarding your specific situation.
  • The Hurley Foundation will be glad to assist you and your professional advisor. If you do not have a professional advisor, we can direct you to area professionals that may meet your needs.
