The Hurley Children’s Center, named after pediatrician Dr. Sumathi Mukkamala, is located adjacent to the Flint Farmers’ Market and opened on August 11, 2015. It provides primary care and twelve different specialty healthcare services to the children of mid-Michigan. Many of the Center’s patients are from low-income backgrounds and experience many of the health disparities associated with poverty. Poorer health outcomes can have a number of repercussions on disease management, prevention, and the effectiveness of treatment. Our new location helps improve access to care and healthy food for our children and families. That will be the focus of the Center and its impact in the community.
The Center enables pediatricians, including resident doctors, to serve more patients in a shorter amount of time while still giving exceptional care. The space includes 23 exam rooms, an education center for resident physicians, preceptor areas, primary and specialty care nurse work stations, a social worker’s office, an administrative secretary office, and physician offices. The Center’s design is patient- and family-centered, incorporating an open layout so that team-based care is best accommodated.
Co-locating a pediatric center in a Farmers’ Market is a novel concept that changes the culture of health in our community. Another advantage is its convenient location across the street from Flint’s main bus station, which helps patients and their families to make their appointments on time. The Michigan State University Pediatric Residents who are taught at the Center also reap the benefits being in the heart of downtown Flint’s new Health and Wellness Corridor and across the parking lot from MSU’s College of Human Medicine.
Additionally, the existence of the new Center is evidence that Hurley Children’s Hospital is expanding its role as the area’s premier public healthcare provider - fulfilling our mission of “Clinical Excellence. Service to People.” - the hallmark of our service to every person who walks through our doors.
The Foundation is currently accepting donations to go towards the Hurley Children’s Center to help the pediatric patients and their families.
